How To Organize Teens’ Paperwork

1) Scrapbook Storageย Boxes

You’re probably thinking, what, you want me to shove all their stuff in a box? Kind of. It’s important to keep your teens’ schoolwork organized. According to Teens Health, everything is easier when you’re organized.

Designate a scrapbook storageย box for each child, each school year. Every time they come home with treasured papers, ooh and ahh, then stick the papers in their box!

It took me a while to realize file folders weren’t cutting it. We needed something bigger. Something that the kids could put everything in from their school year. A place they could easily access when they needed to refer back to previous work.

It was amazing how often I found my teenagers going through their boxes looking for a paper. It made me so happy that they knew right where to look! Sometimes they even went back to previous years to either look for a particular paper that could help them out with current work or to be nostalgic.

At the end of each year, go through their schoolwork and save the most important pieces. You can even involve your kids in this process so when they go back to look for something, it won’t be your fault it’s missing.

I like to create photo books for each school year and this system makes it easy to scan the more interesting work to incorporate into their books. Once this step is done, you might decide to discard the hard copies. Now that my kids are young adults, they like to go back and look through their books.

2) Medical Binder

No more digging through paperwork or calling doctors’ offices to figure out what medication Sally Sue reacted to last time. Nope! Because you are organized!

Your teenager will eventually become a young, independent adult and will have their very own medical binder to take into this big world with them. They will be empowered to make wise decisions because they will have their medical history at their fingertips.

Your young adult children will know what doctor to call or have the information they need to give a new doctor.

3) The Big Book of Everything

Well, almost everything! Think long-term, here. This is the binder where you will put the things that you can’t bear to part with like that driver’s permit she no longer needs because she passed the test and has the real deal now, or those ASB cards from years past, and passwords! You know those little pieces of scrap paper aren’t doing the job and they end up getting frustrated and starting new accounts everywhere. Is that just us?

How This System Helps When Your Kids Become Young Adults

As teens grow and become young adults, staying organized is even more important. The systems you set up now, will help them manage their paperwork on their own later.

For example, as your teens head off to college, they will be able to refer back to important papers or projects in their boxes that could be useful for future assignments. The Medical Binder will be handy when they need to provide health history to new doctors or manage their own medical care without your help. The Book of Everything is a resource they will refer to over and over when they need to access important information. This system provides a sense of security for both you and your kids, knowing that they have all the information they need.

By starting these organizational habits early, youโ€™re not just helping your teen manage their paperwork, youโ€™re giving them the tools and confidence they need to navigate adulthood.

Frequently Asked Questions

The scrapbook storage box should be used to hold all their work throughout the year. At the end of the school year, you should sort through the box with your teen and keep the most most important and meaningful work so the box stays manageable. Math papers often came in handy for my kids so it might be good to keep those to help them in their future high school years.

Get your teen involved from the start and encourage them to regularly add their paperwork to their scrapbook storage box, their Medical Binder, and The Book of Everything. When they ask for information, you can refer them to the appropriate spot to look. Making it a habit will help them stay organized as they transition into adulthood.
